Violent Video Games Affect Children

Harsh study patterns, high competition in school and pressure from parents, friends, and teachers are some issues that children are facing these days.

One way for kids to relieve stress is playing video games. However, kids can get so addicted to video games that they may change their lifestyle.

Happily, there are many positive effects of video gaming than the negative effects. For instance, playing violent video games has numerous benefits than most people are not aware.

According to research, violent video games are some of the best teachers for aggressive attitudes.

Even though some people claim that the high rise of violence in the world is as a result of playing violent video games, this is not true.

In fact, kids who observe adults acting violently can follow their behavior more than what they see inside games.

Also, there is no relationship between violent video gaming and performing violent acts.

The fights or battles that children engage in when playing violent video games are not like the actual violence.

What does research say about violent video games?

Based on recent research, there is no link between violent video gaming and real violence. Video games do not cause violent feelings, thoughts or behavior.

For instance, if all kids who play violent video gaming turn violent, it means there could be a lot of violence in schools and colleges.

Most parents are afraid of video games because they think their kids would become violent after playing.

On average, boys spend more than two hours every day playing video games, and girls spend approximately one hour.

Even though the majority of the games have education content, some games allow kids and teens to play or discuss with total strangers.

But research shows that video games can be healthy, fun and a good way to motivate a child.

Most video games promote problem-solving, faster decision-making, development of fine-motor-skills, coordination, and they promote learning.

Do violent video games affect children?

According to digital game fans, most of them have played video games for a long time and they have never thought of killing or hurting someone.

Actually, if you feel tense, frustrated or depressed, playing a video game can help reduce the tension. Today, more than 90 % of kids and teenagers play video games.

Since most of these games are violent or action games, it does not mean they are bad for every child. The most important thing is for the parents to control their children.

You need to expand your knowledge about video games and the kind of influence they can have on your children.

Playing violent video games or watching violent TV programs can make kids aggressive towards their teachers or parents.

And based on research, more than 5 percent are addicted to these games. This means that it is not easy to prevent your child from playing violent games.

But you can regulate what they play and how they play. Below are some effects of violent video games on children.

Negative effects of playing video games

There are different types of games on the market. They consist of education, entertainment, and casual games.

But it is impossible for a child to choose an education video game over driving cars or killing dragons.

Though girls may like the education games, boys are likely to choose violent or action games.

Among the negative effects of playing violent games include a higher heart rate, nausea and being aggressive.

Even though it is not clear whether aggression increases after playing the violent games, it is possible to notice behavior changes on a child.

Another way violent video games affect children is the addiction. Kids can spend a lot of hours gaming instead of playing outdoors.

By spending a lot of time on the computer or console, they are disconnected from social life. They will feel more attached to the games than to people. Keep in mind the obesity issue.

Studies have also confirmed that even though violent video gaming may not determine aggressive or violent behavior, it can increase signs of a violent behavior.

Cases of bullying in school and colleges can be associated with video gaming. This means that digital games might affect the kid indirectly by increasing its risk factors.

Violent video games and their effects on children

Playing violent video games can be a great tool for motivating kids to compete in school. Gaming can also be used to strengthen required behavior.

There are so many studies that show violent video games can be used to enhance skills, to enhance quicker decision-making and as a rehabilitation for chronic diseases.

Did you know that violent video games can help you burn more calories than board games?

Gaming is a lighter physical activity. If you choose your child’s games wisely, they can help enhance many personal skills.

Based on scientific research, violent video games do not have serious negative effects.

Since most of these games are very challenging and more competitive than the non-violent games, they help to develop problem-solving skills and increase the brain capacity.

They also lead to more aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behavior.

Final Note

According to many researchers, violent behavior can be determined by many factors. Some factors include peers, families, and individual behaviors.

For instance, living in a violent neighbor or being a victim of violence can lead to a violent behavior. This means playing violent games alone cannot cause someone to be violent.

Despite many disagreements on the effects of playing violent video games, it is clear that violence in gaming doesn’t exactly lead to violent behavior.

However, having rules that prohibit the sale of violent video games to children is important.

Parents should also monitor and select digital games for their children, play games with them, and encourage them to spend less time with violent games.

It might not be possible to prevent a kid from playing video games, but it is important to filter the content. You can also set some rules if you notice growth of bad habits.

Tips for Parents

I personally play diffrent types of video games for personal pleasure, for testing and for reviews. I find that violent games can have an effect on the player based on their mood.

For example, if I feel depressed or down, I like playing fun games that cheer me up like helping others or solving puzzles.

When I feel lazy or sluggish, I like playing fast action type video games that get me going and can give me a challenge.

Always check on your children’s mood and try to identify how he or she is feeling; if they look angry or upset, don’t let them play violent games.
