Day #1

I’m super excited to start playing this online game. I did play it about two years ago but many things have changed. Let’s begin this journey.

How to install Star Wars the Old Republic (SWTOR) online game?

So the first thing I did was to search for the game’s home page. I typed “Star Wars the Old Republic download” and clicked on the link that looked like this: swtor.com/game/download.

Once you land on the game’s download page, simply click on the download button to begin downloading the game. The game’s client is the first thing that will download.

Decide where you want to install the game, for example, I have all my huge games on my F: Drive. If you don’t select a drive to download the game, it will download in C: Drive.

Depending on your internet speed, it should take around two to three hours to completely download SWTOR. It took me about three hours to download the entire game.

Unfortunately for me, maintenance was being done on all game servers, so I had to wait extra to start playing. Yeah, my luck.

Creating a Character in SWTOR

To start the game, log in through the game-client and choose a game server. After choosing a server, you two options, align with the Galactic Republic or the Sith Empire.

I chose the Galactic Republic to start my adventures. The next step before playing is to choose a class. There are currently eight classes one can pick.

Each class has its own unique story-line and special sets of skills.

Tip: To find out more about each class, look above the characters and you will find five buttons marked as “Equipment”, “Abilities”, “Advanced Classes”, “Combat Roles” and “Story”.

Now it’s time to talk about the free-to-play and paid membership. During your initial character creation, you only have access to three species on a free-to-play account.

Is Star Wars the Old Republic free-to-play?

In order to play any other species, you need to purchase them individually or pay a monthly membership fee. This is where it gets hairy for many gamers.

Right underneath each portrait, there’s a button that takes you to an external SWTOR website to buy in-game currency with real money.

This restriction feels harsh especially when they’re competing with other free-to-play MMO’s that allow you to play any character from the beginning.

I know this will turn down many people and they may just go out and play something else. However, coming from a hardcore gamer, it’s always a good idea to give the game a chance.

The three main races are the Humans, Cyborgs and the Zabraks. Each has their own set of unique abilities that change the way you play the game.

Character Customization in SWTOR

Your next task is to pick a gender and start customizing your avatar. I’m really enjoying this part, you can change almost any detail about your character.

Players can choose a random avatar-look and a random name. Once you’re done making adjustments, the game begins.

After the awesome introduction, take a look at your mini-tutorial to learn more about the game.

Day #2

How are the graphics in Star Wars the Old Republic online game?

The great news is that SWTOR has improved their overall graphics quality. When I logged in for the first time, the game displayed a new option to adjust display settings.

The game looks ten times better than it did two years ago when I played the game for the first time. Think of playing Mass Effect 2 with better graphics.

Menus are more detailed, you can actually read the information much easier than before. Codex and map menus are more colorful and match the game’s overall beauty.

This is a good thing because the game is story-driven and in order to make the game interesting, the video quality must be superb.

I’m so impressed with this game that I’m going to purchase a monthly subscription. I’m currently on Level 8 and I think it’s time to give credit where credit is due.

Day #3

What do you get when you subscribe to Star Wars the Old Republic (SWTOR)?

There are more options for players with paid subscriptions than free-to-play gamers. Here’s a quick list of features:

  • There are more chat options to communicate with other players
  • Your login queue to the server is a high priority
  • At level 1, you get the Sprint ability that makes helps you run faster
  • Players get access to bank slots
  • Users get more trading options at the Galactic Trade Network (GTN)
  • Every month, as a gift players receive credits to use for buying items
  • Display any title you earned for completing missions and much more

Tip: Gamers don’t have to buy a monthly subscription, they can simply purchase non-recurring in game time.

Day#4

How’s the Gameplay in Star Wars the Old Republic?

The gameplay is simple, grab a class-specific quest and begin your journey. SWTOR is a quest-driven game where the story of your character is the ultimate goal of the game.

So far I’m a level 10 human Jedi Consular and there are two types of quests or missions. There’s the main story quest where you will see other players participating in these missions.

But there are class-specific quests that only you can complete to get special rewards and experience.

To be continued…
