How to Update and Fix Gothic 2 Game from Steam
I was so excited once I learned how to update and fix Gothic 2 game that I wanted to share how I did it.
We took most of this information from a helpful page on the Steam community.
However, the instructions there were very short and did not have any images to follow.
With this guide, you will have an easier time installing all files by reading and seeing visual instructions.
How to Update and Fix Gothic 2 Game from Steam

For this update to work, you will need the following requirements:
- Windows 10
- Internet Connection
- Gothic 2 Gold Edition
============================================================================
Gothic 2 Gold Edition
I’m assuming you already installed the game and that’s how you know it doesn’t work.
However, if you don’t have it installed or just bought it, go ahead and install it now.
First, try running the game to see if you get any errors.
If the game runs smoothly on your computer, you don’t need to follow the rest of these instructions.
For those that keep getting an error message, don’t worry, we got you covered in the following steps.
============================================================================
Latest Display Drivers
In order to run Gothic 2 properly, we need to install the latest graphic card drivers.
Type “Device Manager” on the bottom of your computer on the “Windows 10 Search bar” where it says “Type here to search”.

Click on “Device Manager” and a small window will pop up with your main computer devices.
Search for display adapters and click on your graphic card model, for example, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M.
Once it’s highlighted, go to the top of the “Device Manager” toolbar and click on the “Updated device driver” icon.

It will ask you how you want to search for your new drivers, select “Search Automatically for Drivers”.

If it already installed the best drivers for your system, close the “Device Manager” window because you are done.

If there are updates available for your PC, click on search and update all drivers.
After all downloads are complete, close the “Device Manager” window.

Steam Patch
Before downloading this Steam fix, the game has to be installed.
Once you click on the download link, it will ask you if you want to leave Steam to continue with the download.
https://github.com/dosinabox/g2_steam_fix/releases/download/03.20/Gothic_2_Steam_Fix_03.2020.exe
Select “Continue to external site” and automatically it will download the files to your PC.

A pop-up message will appear that says “Windows Protected your PC”.
Click on “More info” then on “Run anyway” to install the program.
Run the Gothic 2 Steam Fix by clicking “next”.

Next, choose the install location on your hard drive; Also, the program may auto-detect the game path file.

When you run the patch, it will search for the game and fix some issues.
However, if you run the patch without having the game installed, it will not install because it cannot find the game file.

DirectX 11 Patch
To play Gothic 2 you will need to download the DirectX 11 Patch.
Click the download link and you will get a warning that you are leaving Steam page.
https://github.com/Kirides/GD3D11/releases/download/v17.7-dev12/Gothic2-GD3D11-17.7-dev12.zip
Select “Continue to external site” to download all files.

Once all files are downloaded, open the zip file from the bottom of the screen.
Select all files
Copy all files

Open the game’s directory on your computer, for example: Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic II\system.
Paste all files into “system” folder.

Don’t worry if you see files in the “system folder”, just add the new files to make the game work.
Note: AMD graphic cards may experience issues with this patch.
So if you have an AMD display adapter, we recommend going to this page and following their instructions.

Virtual Memory Patch
Downloading and applying this fix to your game will improve the amount of virtual memory it could use.
So instead of using 2GB of memory, it will upgrade each program to use 4GB.
Click on the following link. It will take you to a website called NTCORE, and search for “4GB Patch”.
Select “Download the 4GB Patch“

Open and run the 4GB application, it’s going to open the “Select Executable File” menu.
Go to the Steam file folder system, and there you will find three EXE programs you need to upgrade.

Select each one until you have upgraded each EXE program in Gothic 2.
To verify you did this correctly, check for three files that say COPY.

The program made these copies as backups in case something doesn’t work properly.
Close the directory once you’re done verifying all three files.
============================================================================
Adjust Program Settings
Open your video game directory for Gothic 2 Gold Edition.
The files you need are located in the “system” game file.
Search for Gothic II\system\GothicStarter application file and right-click on it.

Go to the properties tab at the bottom.
Select the “Compatibility Tab” and choose Windows 7 as the way to run Gothic 2.
In the same window, select the option to “Run as Administrator” to run the game safely.

Once both steps are complete, close the properties window.
============================================================================
Add Steam Command
Open your Steam application on your computer and go to your “game library” and select Gothic 2 Gold Edition.
Right-click on Gothic 2 Gold Edition and click “Properties” at the bottom.
Look for the “Set launch option” and add the directory to GothicStarter.
At the end of directory add the following code: %command%.

For example, it should look something like this: “E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic II\system\GothicStarter”% command%.
This code tells your computer to open Gothic 2 using special settings.
Now it’s time to play the game, but first, test the “Gothic Starter” to see if it launches.
Click on play, then select yes to “Allow this App” to run on your system.
Finally, the “Gothic Starter” will pop up and you will have the option to “Play” the game.

Congratulations you ‘re all done, it’s time to play.
